90 Years and Growing Strong

What a great weekend we had on October 15th and 16th. Ira First Church of God celebrated their 90th Anniversary as a congregation of the Church of God Reformation Movement. We saw several familiar faces from past years and some new faces to go along with the “regulars”. It was a great privilege to have former pastor, June Downing with us this weekend as she shared some stories of her time in Ira and then brought us God’s message on Sunday morning.

This congregation in the small community of Ira, Texas began as a dream of one family, John and Kitty Smallwood. They, along with the Webb and Moore families worked together to raise funds and build the first building of the Church of God. They then called Rev. G.B. Walters to come and help establish the Church of God in Ira. Ninety years later the congregation has seen several changes with a new sanctuary, annex, parsonage and youth center being added. But the main focus continues to be people. Jesus called us to be “fishers of men” and even though our “lake” may seem small compared to other churches and towns, we know that wherever there are people there is someone who needs Jesus in their life.

My family feels so blessed that in 1998 Juanita Hester and the pulpit committee felt the desire to call and invite me to candidate to be their pastor. I feel even more blessed because God laid it on my heart that Ira was the place I should be. Eighteen plus years later, I feel that we all made the right decision in listening to God’s call and direction.

I can only imagine what Ira First Church of God will be like when the next 90 years pass by, but I pray that the people who are here then will realize, just like we have today, that there have been many people who have done so much to keep the mission and purpose of the Ira Church of God focused on loving Jesus, winning the lost, and caring for others.
